~ Day 2 (Sunday) ~

Breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant.

Midmorning we’ll take you to the airport for the trip to the Arctic.

Upon arrival we will take a shuttle to our hotel, the Winter Palace Hotel in Kiruna. Built in 1904, and very nicely renovated in 1990, each room is uniquely designed and decorated. Sandwiches and drinks will await you at the hotel meeting room, where you will meet our Sami guide, my friend Nils Torbjorn Nutti. Nils has raised reindeer his whole life, and has spent countless months in the wilderness herding reindeer with the Sami community.

You will then be given warm winter gear, and we will drive for about a half hour to Jukkasjärvi, where you will be introduced to the reindeer. You will be given a brief lesson on how to lasso and drive reindeer. Then it’s up to you to lasso your own reindeer so you can drive it on a sled through the arctic! And you can race the others on the tour on the reindeer racetrack!

We will have a traditional Sami dinner in a traditional Sami ‘teepee’ called a lavvu, where we sit on reindeer skins and enjoy reindeer meat cooked over a fire (vegetarian options are available for the whole trip, if requested).

Then we’ll return to the Winter Palace Hotel where you can enjoy a sauna before bed.
